Product Details

This is a Francis Barker hunter cased 'Scouting' pattern compass, dating from the last quarter of the 19th century. This particular compass appeared in many Barker catalogues, from the late 19th century until the 1920s. The later versions had luminous markers and transit locks, neither of which are present in this earlier version. The paper card design is the distinctive Barker 'R.G.S.' pattern, which first appeared in production around 1875. This compass has an 'oxidised' blackened brass case, paper compass card, jewelled pivot and paper sighting line inside the lid (only a small piece of this remains in place). The bottom of the case features an inset ivory or ivorine disc that was intended to be used for making pencil notes. The compass is in full working order and finds north well.

Condition:

In good condition and full working order, with some minor marks and wear to the brass case.

Dimensions: 45mm (65mm including loop)
